Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate holiday for zero-contract employees?

Like most workers, zero-hours contract employees are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. This is equivalent to 12.07% of the total number of hours worked in a year. The 12.07% figure is calculated by taking 5.6 weeks’ holiday and dividing it by 46.4 weeks (which is 52 weeks less 5.6 weeks). To calculate you would use the employees worked hours and multiply by 12.07%.

How do I keep track of employees holiday

We suggest using software that manages your holiday management system. That way, employees can request leave via the software and you as Employer will receive notification of holiday requests and can authorise no matter where you are. This is especially useful for multi-site businesses. Let us know if you would like further information on this platform and setup.

When do I need to enrol employees into workplace pension?

Employers must automatically enrol employees into a pension scheme and make contributions to their pension if all the following apply:

  • you’re classed as a ‘worker’
  • you’re aged between 22 and State Pension age
  • you earn at least £10,000 per year

How do I setup a workplace pension

Employers must first work out when their auto-enrolment duties start. You can use this on the Pension Regulator site: https://www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/en/employers, or alternatively, we can handle this for you.

The setup is then a 4-step process:

  • Choose a pension scheme provider
  • Work out which employers need to be put into a pension (you should do this on your duties start date)
  • Write to your staff to inform them whether they are eligible or not and what they need to do.
  • Declare your Compliance to the Pension Regulator.

Of course, CJ Bookkeeping can handle all of this for you as part of the payroll management service. Contact us if you need any further help or advice.
